Southeastern Pennsylvania Behavioral Health Initiative
Bridging Jobs to Careers
The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation and Hitachi Foundation are supporting a three-year behavioral health initiative to develop career ladders and competency- based training in behavioral health. Partners include District 1199C Training and Upgrading Fund, Temple University Health System, Philadelphia Health Management Corporation, District 1199C of the National Union of Hospital and HealthCare Employees — AFCSME, Philadelphia University, University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey, Temple University Hospital System Learning and Development Center and the Philadelphia Workforce Investment Board.

Outcomes achieved in 2006-2007 include:

  • identification of a comprehensive list of work-based competencies developed with input from employers and workers that cut across residential and inpatient settings

  • work-based learning curricula that provide seminar and on-the-job learning activities resulting in assessment of competencies learned

  • assessment tools to measure competencies

  • train the trainer curricula to provide supervisors with an understanding of the work-based learning

  • curricula,work-based learning projects to be performed by students,and assessment tools to measure attainment of competencies

  • coaching training for supervisors to support students in work-based learning

  • additional funding from Hitachi Foundation to fund the first stage of a return on investment study of the project by the Aspen Institute
