This is a three-step program offered in collaboration with partnering human services employers
to help behavioral health workers move up the career ladder through collegiate study.
Steps
Step 1: Training Fund’s Behavioral Health Technician Program
(21 College Credits from Philadelphia University)
Step 2: 30-Credit certificate from Philadelphia University
(* Students may take up to two courses prior to entering the formal program)
This 30-credit program builds on the District 1199C Behavioral Health Technician Program that has been approved by the Pennsylvania Department of Education for post-secondary credit and that has an articulation agreement with Philadelphia University Continuing and Professional Studies. Individuals who have successfully completed the specified training program and are recommended by the training provider have the opportunity to earn a Philadelphia University Certificate in Behavioral Health. All coursework articulates with Philadelphia University Continuing and Professional Studies Associate in Science: health and Human Services and Philadelphia University Continuing and Professional Studies Accelerated Bachelor of Science programs.

Step 3: Associate’s Degree from Philadelphia University
This 60-credit program build on Health and Human Services technical training program that have been approved by the Pennsylvania Department of Education for post-secondary credit and that have articulation agreements with Philadelphia University. Individual who have successfully completed the specified training program and are recommended by the training provider have the opportunity to earn a Philadelphia University Associate in Science: Health and Human Services degree. All coursework articulate with Philadelphia University Continuing and Professional Studies Accelerated Bachelor of Science programs.

The Southeastern Pennsylvania Behavioral Health Industry Partnership has recently published a searching report focusing on emerging workforce issues in the behavioral healthcare arena.
"A Review of Current Information About the Careers of the Direct Support Professional Workforce in the Mental Health, Developmental Disabilities, and Substance Abuse Service Delivery Systems"
The report
begins with a comprehensive review of the characteristics, job roles and responsibilities, demographic characteristics, compensation, tenure and reported job satisfaction of behavioral health direct care workers in institutional and community settings.
The report also looks at required competencies, competency-based training opportunities for the workforce, work-based learning models and career development challenges for direct care professionals, leading to a dozen recommendations for change to better recognize and reward these critical workers. The report provides both a state and national analysis of the need for the development of more effective career paths for entry-level workers, and is available in pdf format or by calling the District 1199C Training and Upgrading Fund (215.568.2220).
